The purpose of the present study is to undertake a phenomenological study of the lived experiences of retired couples and to classify the types of marital relationships by means of a qualitative method. To accomplish the objectives of this study, research data have been collected by interviews with six retired couples whose husbands retired from their jobs within 5 years. Data were analyzed using Giorgi¡¯s Descriptive Phenomenology. As a result, seven major constituents and 29 sub-constituents have been identified. Based on the lived experiences presented in the marital relationships of retired couples, their martial relations have been categorized into five types according to the aspects of the couple¡¯s interactions. The aspects shown in marital relationships of retired couples are found to be a process of readaptation to maintain the marital relationship. Therefore, investigation into those factors would enable us to better understand the retired couples and be helpful in carrying out counseling them.
